12/04/2008 - New York, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The National Football League Players Association is expected to file a grievance on behalf of suspended New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress.
The Giants suspended the oft-troubled receiver four games and placed him on the reserve/non-football injury list Tuesday after he accidentally shot himself in the leg early Saturday morning at a New York City night club.
"The NFLPA is still reviewing the actions taken by the New York Giants relating to Plaxico Burress, but we intend to file a grievance challenging those actions as we believe that Burress' rights have been violated under the CBA," the NFLPA said in a statement.
Earlier this week, Burress surrendered to authorities and was arraigned on a pair of weapons charges stemming from the accidental shooting. The wide receiver was shot in the right thigh and spent time at a New York-area hospital.
The suspension is the second of the season for Burress, who missed the October 2 game against Seattle as punishment for conduct detrimental to the team.
"The decision we made today regarding Plaxico's roster status was based on the examination of Plaxico by our team physician," Giants general manager Jerry Reese said Tuesday. "(Team physician) Dr. Rodeo believes Plaxico would be out at least four-to-six weeks with the gunshot wound."
For the season, Burress has 35 receptions for 454 yards with four touchdowns.
It's been a whirlwind few months for Burress, who signed a contract extension just before the team's season-opener against the Redskins in September. He went on to register 10 catches for 133 yards against Washington, but his numbers have dropped considerably in the face of double teams, his earlier suspension and injury.
